Yavneh defeated Cambridge, formerly Logos, 39-29 Tuesday evening to improve the Bulldogs record to a perfect 3-0.
The Yavneh win/loss record was the only thing that remained perfect after Tuesday night’s basketball game marred by turnovers and poor shooting. Yavneh turned the ball over 24 times, while Cambridge shot a disappointing 10 50 from the field. Yavneh got off to great 8-0 and 15-2 starts behind hot first quarter shooting by David Naxon and Josh Abrams. The game, however, hit a lull in the second quarter when both teams were having trouble taking care of the basketball and putting it in the hoop. Cambridge had multiple opportunities to make a game out of it, but their lack of athleticism seemed to be their ultimate downfall. They were able to get to the basket at will and even rebounded the majority of their misses several times but just couldn’t put the ball in the basket. The Yavneh guards particularly struggled holding onto the ball, throwing it right to the Cambridge defenders on a number of occasions. At one point in the third quarter, Coach Baruch resorted to his patented 5-man substitution when unhappy with the performance of the starters. This lasted for over 4 minutes before the starters were able to get re-focused and close out the game. Despite Cambridge’s repeated efforts, they never could get the lead under 10 after the first quarter. The sluggish win was important for the Bulldogs as their now 3-0 record marks Yavneh’s best start since the 1999-2000 season when they started 5-0. Also, the win allows Yavneh to bypass the potential pitfall of losing a look-ahead game as their sights are clearly set on Dallas Academy and then DISD public school Sunset next week.
Yavneh (3-0) will play Dallas Academy on Wednesday night.
