Covenant defeated Yavneh 67-44 Tuesday evening to drop the Bulldogs record to 9-5.
A struggling offense and a soft defense turned out to be a lethal combination for the Yavneh Bulldogs in their quest to start out 2006 on a winning note. They were crushed 67-44 in a game that Yavneh could never establish a consistent offensive or defensive attack. Sophomore David Naxon started off the game strong with two three point plays in the first 4 minutes of the first quarter. Yavneh led 11-8 at the end of the quarter. Yavneh would not score another field goal until late in the third quarter. Meanwhile, Covenant, led by their own Super Sophomore twins Matt and Pierce Edwards, clamped down on defense and hit their stride offensively. With a couple three point hits and a series of backdoor lay-ups, Covenant took over to the tune of 27-17 at the half. Things would get worse to start the second half as Covenant scored 8 straight points and eventually opened up a 48-21 lead late in the third quarter. Finally, with 2:34 to go in the third quarter, Yavneh would hit another field goal and ended the quarter on their own 8-0 run. They would trim the deficit as low as 50-34 with 6 minutes to go before a patented Yavneh turnover turned the game for good. The bench was cleared at that point, contributing to the 67-44 final. David Naxon finished with 17 points while Josh Abrams caught fire in the latter stages of the game to finish with 16 points on 5-9 shooting. Matt Edwards scored 25 points while his brother Pierce added 16 for Covenant.
Yavneh (9-5) will play Metro Christian Thursday night looking to right the ship.
