Yavneh defeated Cambridge 40-21 Monday night. The win improves the Bulldogs record to 5-3.
Elan Kogutt scored 13 points in just 11 minutes to help breeze Yavneh past a young Cambridge team Monday. Playing without fellow scoring threat Jordan Prescott, Kogutt was at his most efficient thus far this year connecting on 6/9 field goals and did not miss a single free throw. The New Look Bulldogs again played everybody and got contributions from up and down the lineup. The biggest difference is the energy level over the last two games, and Cambridge had no answer on this night. Making his first career start, zone busting Sophomore Josh Lynn connected on a triple early in the first period, and with the help of two slips to the basket by Freshman Itai Guttman, Yavneh led 7-3. The lead grew to double digits early in the second stanza more with defense than anything else. Cambridge could not put the ball in the basket and the game boiled down to exactly that.
The Bulldogs led by just 9 points at the half but Kogutt made his statement to start the final 16 minutes. On one spin move, the Cambridge defender was so befuddled that he looked at Kogutt as if to ask for a map on how to get out of the way next time. The second half also featured a passing display by Freshman Sam Kleinman. 5 very nice assists including a no-look pass to classmate Adam Steinbrecher for his first career points were instrumental in popping the lead to 15 in no time. It was nice to see yet another younger brother of a former Yavneh player with similar playing styles (3) come to fruition. The Bulldogs dominated the boards and surely out-shot Cambridge but once again struggled from the charity stripe (2/9) and turned the ball over 17 times against a passive defense to say the least. The Frenetic Freshman once again made a strong impact with a nice 8/5/5 appearance, all four field goals right at the basket with nice finishes. Senior Shimi Wolk completed a nice three point play and committed exactly 4 fouls for the second time in three games, continuing the theme of brothers taking after brothers of Bulldog past. Also of note, Junior Jordan Prescott did not play due to illness. He is officially listed as Questionable for Tuesday.
Yavneh (5-3) will be right back in the gym Tuesday as they host DISD public school Thomas Jefferson. It will be the Bulldogs’ fifth game in six days and the first true test for the new player rotation.
