Sunset High School of the Dallas Independent School District defeated Yavneh 60-48 Monday evening to hand the Bulldogs their first loss of the season.
For the first four games of the year, Yavneh consistently handed the ball to its opponents, averaging 17.5 turnovers a game. They played sloppy and survived each time, almost painfully. Monday night they met a team that would take advantage of those mistakes and take advantage they did. Yavneh (4-1) committed 30 turnovers and allowed a season-high 19 offensive rebounds en route to a 60-48 defeat at the hands of Sunset High School. Yavneh super sophmore David Naxon had 30 points and 16 rebounds in the loss. Jonathan Carreon led the way for Sunset with 14. Yavneh again started strong as has been their pattern all year. Despite 17 first half turnovers, the Bulldogs were able to get Naxon involved in the game early, including two three point plays underneath the basket. Yavneh led by as many as 7 in the first half before the turnovers started to take their toll. They trailed by 4 at the break. The sea of turnovers continued into the second half as Yavneh created opportunity after opportunity for Sunset to extend their lead. The slow half-court pace that Yavneh wanted to establish never came to pass in the second half, constantly falling into the trap of running with the quicker, more athletic Sunset team. A combination of foul trouble for Sunset and the inability to finish easy fast break opportunities at their offensive end kept the Sunset lead to within 10 into the fourth quarter. Yavneh could never get the lead to a workable number in the final quarter. The loss ends the dream of matching the best start in Yavneh’s history one game short. This is also the first loss to Sunset in the teams’ 3 game series.
Yavneh will try to rebound against longtime rival Highlands Tuesday night. They will be looking for revenge after last year’s thumping at the hands of the Highlands School.
