Winston School 61-35

Yavneh defeated The Winston School 61-35 Tuesday evening. The win improves the Bulldogs record to 16-4.

It must have felt good to be able to punish an opponent with athleticism, speed, and talent only days after getting a heavy dose of a D-1 college prospect. The game was seemingly over shortly after Winston starting guard Jeff Beer finished his cell phone conversation during his team’s pre-game warm ups while practicing layups with the opposite hand. David Naxon scored 15 of his 17 points in the opening quarter and the Bulldogs never looked back. The game was 14-3 after six minutes as Winston could not hold on to the ball. They shot a very proficient 3/5 from the field but turned the ball over on their other 11 possessions. That turned into a clinic of Bulldog fast break points…The Yavneh opposition’s key weapon over the previous three out of four game losing streak was suddenly their biggest ally as the tables turned. In that opening quarter Yavneh also had their most electric passing period of the year. Alley-oops and no-look passes were all featured as the Bulldogs ran up, down, and around the Eagles for 73% shooting. Reserves finished out most of the rest of the game and the lead never dropped below 14. Freshman Elan Kogutt played nearly the entire game, tallying a game-high 18 points. Winston’s Zach Cast also scored 18. Freshman Jared Katz made both of his free throws for his first career points, and both Shimi Wolk and Ilan Attar highlighted the second half with power moves on the inside. If the Bulldogs seemed comfortable in the Winston gym, it should have come as no surprise. While Yavneh is now just 2-0 vs. Winston, they have won several Winston Tournaments in the building dating back several years.

Yavneh (16-4) will play Temple Christian aka “The Green Team” on Thursday. One of Yavneh’s longest rivals will be fired up to see the Bulldogs for the first time this season surely.
